This spring, from May 14–23, 2026, Mimic Immersive unveiled a multi-sensory installation at the Doha International Book Fair, one of the Middle East's leading cultural events. 


Designed to explore how technology can deepen the way people experience stories, culture, and heritage, the activation combined scent, immersive binaural soundscapes, and interactive storytelling to create a memorable journey through Qatari traditions and landscapes. 


The project reflects our vision of using immersive technologies to create richer, more meaningful connections between audiences and cultural narratives, while showcasing how museums, exhibitions, and public events can engage visitors in entirely new ways.

What Is the Doha International Book Fair?


The Doha International Book Fair is one of the oldest and largest international book fairs in the Middle East, first launched in 1972 and held annually at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC). The 2026 edition, its 35th, ran from May 14 to May 23 and became the largest in the fair's history, bringing together more than 520 publishing houses from 37 countries across over 910 pavilions and nearly two million books.


The fair is organized by Qatar's Ministry of Culture and has evolved well beyond a marketplace for books. Each edition names a Guest of Honor, hosts seminars and author talks, and increasingly makes room for cultural exchange formats that sit outside traditional publishing, which is where an activation like Mimic Immersive's found its footing.


For a fair operating at that scale, standing out is a spatial and sensory problem as much as a design one. Hundreds of pavilions compete for the same visual attention. Multi-sensory experience design gave Mimic Immersive's installation a different register to work in entirely: instead of competing for eyes, it worked through smell, sound, and touch.

The Experience: Beyond a Traditional Booth


Mimic Immersive's installation, developed under the working concept "The Living Majlis," was designed as an interactive journey rather than a static display. The goal was to combine scent, sound, and spatial design to create a more immersive connection between visitors and the cultural themes on show, transforming information into a memorable sensory encounter.


Two systems carried most of the experience:

  • Localized scent machines releasing aromas tied to Qatari heritage as visitors moved through different sections of the space

  • Directional binaural audio delivering location-specific soundscapes as visitors walked through defined "environment" segments


Both systems were built to be modular. The scent and sound logic behind the Living Majlis concept is not tied to one floor plan; it is designed to adapt to different booth footprints, room shapes, and cultural themes, which matters for a studio building activations across the wider Mimicverse portfolio of brands.


The Scent of Heritage


The centerpiece of the sensory design was what the team called the Scent of Heritage: a sequence of localized scent machines releasing aromas as visitors moved through the space. Traditional Qatari coffee, oud, and coastal sea-salt notes were among the scents used to root the experience in place rather than leaving it as generic ambient perfume.


Inside the gallery, this idea took physical form in a wall of arched, gold-lit niches, each one framing a single scent vessel and a labeled botanical illustration in Arabic and English: lemon, neroli, mandarin, lavender. Small bell-shaped diffusers sat beneath each niche, with brass plaques identifying the note in both languages, a detail that mattered for a fair drawing visitors from 37 countries.


Scent is a deliberate design choice, not decoration. Research on olfaction consistently shows that smell is more tightly linked to memory and emotion than sight or sound, because olfactory signals route directly through the brain's limbic system before conscious processing catches up. For a book fair built around heritage storytelling, that link is the point: a scent that visitors associate with Qatari coffee or oud does more to anchor a memory of the fair than another photo booth would.


Binaural Soundscapes: Mangroves and Desert


Running alongside the scent design was a binaural soundscape layer, using directional audio so that visitors walking through the installation's "environment" segment heard sounds specific to two of Qatar's most recognizable natural landmarks: the Al Thakira mangroves and the habitat of the Arabian Oryx.


Al Thakira, on Qatar's northeastern coast near Al Khor, is one of the country's oldest and largest mangrove forests and one of its last intact mangrove ecosystems, home to more than 150 recorded bird species along with fish and crustaceans that shelter in its root systems. Recreating its ambient soundscape, water, wind through mangrove leaves, birdsong, gave the installation a sense of place that a generic nature track could not.


The Arabian Oryx carries similar weight. Hunted to extinction in the wild by the 1970s, the species was restored through Qatar's Operation Oryx conservation program and now serves as the country's national animal, appearing on Qatar Airways tailfins and in national symbolism. Layering its habitat sounds into the installation tied the experience to a story Qatar tells about itself: resilience, restoration, and care for a fragile desert ecosystem.


Because the audio was directional rather than ambient, different sections of the walkway triggered different soundscapes, letting visitors move through distinct "zones" of Qatar's geography inside a single indoor footprint.

Inside the Gallery: Scent, Vessel, Ritual


Beyond the scent wall, the installation's display gallery leaned into a slower, more intimate register than a typical fair booth. Curved, deep-maroon walls housed a second run of arched niches, this time holding a rotating collection of vessels: a hand-painted ceramic bottle, an ornate metal goblet, a cobalt-blue perfume flask, a crystal decanter, ornamental urns.


Each niche was individually lit from above, warm spotlighting picking out gold detailing against the dark wall, while a low, curved plinth at the center of each room held a dense floral arrangement of roses, carnations, and dried botanicals in seasonal palettes, deep burgundy and blush in one room, warm apricot and cream in another. Brass plaques set into the plinths carried explanatory text, and a small marker beside each arrangement suggested an interactive or wayfinding element built into the display itself.


The effect reads closer to a boutique fragrance museum than a publishing fair pavilion, and that was deliberate. By slowing visitors down physically, curved walls, dim lighting, a single walkway, the space asks for the kind of attention that scent and sound both need to land.
